e-Sword Bible Study Software

e-Sword

An unbelievable amount of free stuff for your PC. Excellent quality and easy to use. I highly recommend this!

--quote from Online Research Tools | Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary Library

www.e-sword.net - a program, free, in English, and easy to use. It has additional Bibles, commentaries, maps, etc. It can compare a single text against the other versions and to copy the results to your favorite program. You can read it, search, copy, print, etc. Organize your comments by verse. This free software is an excellent resource for your Microsoft® Windows PC (there's a Pocket PC version, too) that becomes a biblical student's library when the add-ons are downloaded and installed. The application installs with the King James Version of the Holy Bible keyed to Strong's Greek and Hebrew Concordance (which it also comes with).

    With e-Sword, you can

    • Set both the font and the size of the font; and there's a built-in magnifier.
    • Set different fonts for Bibles, Commentaries, etc.
    • Run up to four bibles in parallel while reading.
    • Select a particular verse and see it displayed in every version of the bible you have loaded.
    • Copy verses is a function that allows you to paste verses by one of seven different formats.
    • Print verses, or large selections of a bible, or whole bibles (load up on ink cartridges and paper...)
    • A virtual highlighter allows you to highlight verses with any color that Windows can display! (There are six default colors, plus white, plus the whole palette).
    • Search verses for a particular word, partial word, phrase or even Strong's number.
    • Have many dictionaries concurrently loaded, from Strong's numbers, to Thayer's Greek, to two King James dictionaries, to Webster's 1828 dictionary of the English language, in case you can't remember what "kine" are.
    • Search through the dictionaries.
    • When scripture is refered to, get a hyperlink which can either pull up the scripture in the reader or can pop-up a tool-tip displaying the verses.
    • Have many commentaries concurrently loaded. Search through the commentaries, too.
    • Have many topic notes loaded (one at a time), which are supplemental, or extra-biblical writings which are stored in a fairly easy to access area.
    • Write study notes and save them for future reference. e-Sword can import rich text and text files, and can export them. It also has a built-in spell-checker and thesaurus.
    • View Biblical maps, from modern NASA shots of the holy land, to public domain maps.
    • Use the tools menu to access several daily devotionals, create a Bible reading plan using either the Old and/or New Testaments, in the version of the Bible you want.
    • Manage prayer requests electronically.
    • e-Sword can display a random Bible verse at startup or start with a devotional reading.

    Usage Tip:

The first time you download it, it is a large file. But always make sure you're running the latest version. The program updates are typically 1/3 of the whole program download.

    e-Sword installation

Windows users: No problem; there's an installation already for you!

PocketPC users: No problem; there's an installation already for you!

Linux users: read Frank Hendriksen's original information on how to run E-Sword under Linux using the Windows Emulator (WINe - recommended to be Wine version 20050111 or later) - frankscorner.org; it's in the home and education section http://frankscorner.org/index.php?p=e-sword

Mac Users: To run e-Sword you need to be able to run Windows apps.

  • If you have an Intel processor (example: MacBook not an iBook), you can use Parallels, (15 day trial, $79.99 to buy and you also need a copy of Windows XP or Vista) or you could try Crossover Mac - there's a 30 trial, and it's $59.95 to buy (and you don't need a copy of Windows, either!).
  • Now my iBook G4 (which has a PPC processor) won't run either of those, but I could use Virtual PC for Mac which doesn't work on an Intel PC, but runs mostly fine on recent-vintage Macs.

  • The Updated Version of the Bible - offers its bible in e-Sword format, downloadable from this page. According to that site, The UPDV Bible is based on the American Standard Version of 1901 (ASV). The name “Yahweh” (a personal name for God) and "Yah" (a contracted form of Yahweh) are used instead of what is rendered in many versions as LORD. Plus signs are used next to words such as you+ and your+ when they refer to a group of two or more. This is done to improve accuracy. Gender has generally been translated literally. Words such as man, woman, son, daughter, he, she, him, and her are generally left in the same gender as they were in the original texts. There is no overall effort to remove such distinctions or to make this a gender inclusive translation.
  • Trying to install e-Sword on Linux? - check out WINe HQ (WINe is short for Linux's Windows emulator, and has nothing to do with alcohol, although the site's logo is a half-empty Wine glass).
  • Voice in the Wilderness - according to the site, What it 'is' is a concerted, diligent effort to provide an English edition that actually says 'what' God said. It is compiled from out of the NKJV, LITV and KJV texts.
Commercial Resources For e-Sword:
