Israel Putnam

Cookeville, Tennessee (Putnam County) In 1854, Richard Fielding Cooke (TN Senator, 1851-54) introduced a bill that created Putnam County from the adjacent Fentress, Jackson, Overton, Smith, and White and counties; the act stipulated the county town's name, Cookeville. The county was named in honor of Israel Putnam (1718-1790), a French and Indian War soldier and commander in the Revolutionary War battles of Bunker Hill and Long Island.
