    • Commentaries: - most "study bibles" are bibles with commentaries. A commentary is a study aid in which a scholar comments upon Biblical verses, sometimes with the author's opinions and sometimes cross-referenced with other verses. The Bible is still the best reference to itself and a good working knowledge of the whole Bible is often most helpful. Of the following, Dr. John Gill and Matthew Henry provide the most abundant words on the whole Bible.

    • Dr. John Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible - He preached in the same church as C. H. Spurgeon over one hundred years earlier. Yet most people today have never heard of John Gill. This is unfortunate, since his works contain priceless gems of information that are found nowhere except in the ancient writings of the Jews.     • Robertson's Word Pictures of the New Testament - A.T. Robertson, a renowned scholar of the Greek New Testament, takes through the New Testament, verse by verse, painting word pictures from the Greek to bring to light the words and actions of Jesus and the early Christians. website
    • Scofield Reference Notes (1917 Edition) - For over 90 years people have relied on this reference work in their daily study of God's Word. Written originally in 1909, C. I. Scofield's intent was to provide a concise but complete tool that would meet the need of someone just beginning to read the Bible. website
    • Spurgeon's "The Treasury of David" - This seven volume "magnum opus", by Charles H. Spurgeon, was first published in weekly installments over a twenty-year span in the London Metropolitan Tabernacle's periodical, The Sword and the Trowel. As each section was completed it was published as a volume until the seventh and final volume was released in 1885. website
    • Concordances: A concordance is an index of all main words in the Bible along with their immediate contexts.

    • Strong's Concordance with Hebrew and Greek Lexicon - The Strong's concordance is a very useful tool for studying the scriptures. It takes every single word of the King James Version and lists where each word can be found in the scriptures. It is useful for locating scripture verses that you know the words to, but don't know the book, chapter and verse. Searchable! website
    • The King James Concordance - if you're looking for the number of occurrences and the references to a particular word, this can help. website
    • Nave's Topical Bible - Nave's Topics were produced by Orville J. Nave while serving as a U.S. Army chaplain after years of "delightful and untiring study of the Word of God." His topics were first published in the early 1900s, and consist of more than 20,000 topics and subtopics and 100,000 references to the Scriptures.website
    • Torrey's New Topical Textbook - These topical references are from R. A. Torrey's New Topical Textbook published by Sword of the Lord Publishers, P.O. Box 1099, Murfreesboro, TN, 37133. The New Topical Textbook was published with 20,000 topics and sub-topics and 30,000 Bible references. website
    • The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge has provided a cross-reference resource for Bible students worldwide for generations. This highly respected and nearly exhaustive compilation was developed by R.A. Torrey from references in Thomas Scott's Commentary and the Comprehensive Bible. With nearly 500,000 cross-references it is the most thorough source available. website

    • Easton's Bible Dictionary (we offer this locally, but here is an off-site link) was written by Matthew George Easton, who lived from 1823-1894. This Scottish Presbyterian's other significant literary achievements were his English translations of two of Franz Delitzsch's commentaries. website
    • Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary (which we offer here too, this one is off-site) - This dictionary is from "Hitchcock's New and Complete Analysis of the Holy Bible," written by Roswell D. Hitchcock in 1869. It contains more than 2,500 Bible and Bible-related proper names and their meanings. website
    • King James Dictionary - The King James Bible has stood its ground for nearly 400 years. However, during that time the English language has changed, and with it the meanings of some words it used. Here are more than 800 words whose definitions have changed since 1611.
